The video I created titled “We are in it together” is a work inspired by Anti-Cool’s “Lone Orchestra,” – a piece depicting Anti-Cool as she takes over Montréal band Duchees Says and transforms their soundtrack into her own by impersonating each player.
“We are in it together,” takes the popular Beatles’ song “Yellow Submarine” and allows average people as well as the viewer to take over the song and make it their own. The video shows people from various places in the world coming together for a common goal – to sing the song that they all know, no matter where they come from. Midway through the video, subtitled lyrics of the song are shown to invite the viewer to sing along.
The song was originally intended for children, so the tune is simple and the words are easy to follow, allowing any person to sing along. The song “Yellow Submarine” also presents strong lyrics that depict important values: “The sky is blue and sea is green in a yellow submarine, we all live in a yellow submarine ….” It could be interpreted that the Yellow submarine is planet Earth, each person on Earth needs a blue sky and green “grass” and everyone needs to work together to achieve this. The song was used by the peace movement against the war in Vietnam in the seventies and later by environmentalists.
I have strung each clip together to make one song demonstrating and symbolizing people working together, sometimes even with the risk of being imprisoned (this was shown in the part of the clip where people were dragged away by police in Russia, as recently as last August).
Individuality is also very important in this piece; although people need to work together, it is people’s uniqueness that makes working together great. Each clip is different, yet connected, allowing the viewer to learn, become inspired, and ultimately be entertained.
