Play is recognized as an important factor from our earliest stages of development. Through play, children are able to recognize the world around them, their environment, the community and have a chance to interact with others. By playing, a child is able to learn necessary skills to effectively participate in the world because of the natural opportunities which enhance physical, social, language and cognitive development.
According to Dr. Bruce Perry, he feels that the heart and importance of play, is pleasure. Perry says that play is important fuel for the healthy development of children, and the continued healthy development in adults.
Though play can be thought as of squealing and jumping around, another important form of play is playing with ideas. This can be related and is important to design. Abstract thinking can also be thought of as play. When we fantasize and create, we are playing. In design when we take images, ideas and concepts and re-organize them inside our mind, that is thought to be playing.
