New Media – What is it?
The term new media replaced multi-media during the mid nineties, in reference to the many forms of media that exist and existed. Multi-media in the past refers to printed newspapers and magazines which featured still images and text. The new media technology is vast and ever changing, from DVD and CD-ROM media to the World Wide Web. The term new media will only ever apply to that of the media of the present time in question. Any time before that, it is considered old media. The old media was called new media at the time because it was emergent to that historical context.
Today, we are in the midst of a new media transition – the movement of our culture to more computerized forms such as, production, distribution and communication. Referring to Rick Altman’s thought about “crisis historiography”, he says that at the beginning when a new form of media arises, it goes through a phase of identity crisis because of its unknown medium. For example when the World Wide Web was introduced in 1991, computer users at first were not sure of its actual functions, purposes and the many ways it would be of use to them. As time went on, the World Wide Web’s tasks and ultimate duties became apparent to the public because they were shaped by society’s previous knowledge and habits of media use.
