Play can usually be divided up by two fundamental characteristics. The first characteristic is that statically inert objects are used, which can usually be called “toys”. And these objects can be manipulated for a range of different and satisfying purposes, which such as “games” which manipulate these “toys”. Play can provide both social emotional and physical intellectual development for any stage of life. But most importantly is that play is just simply fun.
Play can usually be divided up into five different types. First is physical play, which consists of any type of physical activity. Next is functional play, which are repeated movements that explore the manipulation of “toys” and other related activities. Also there is constructive play, where the main focus is building and creating structures from smaller parts and materials. Dramatic or fantasy-adventure play consists of imaginary and creative play. Finally rule-governed play is play that has a format or regulations that can set boundaries or restrictions that are all self-imposed.
Play can also help with one’s development and understanding of their identity and relationships with others. It can help with one’s identity because it can allows a person to understand and find their place in the world by allowing them to recreate and explore the world through play. Play can also increase feelings of self-confidence and self worth along with allowing an expression of feelings. It is also an important part of socialization. Play encourages interpersonal relations and contact with others without any restrictions.
Play plays an important role in learning especially for a child, but is not limited to only children. It influences development on physical, mental and emotional levels. This is because it allows one to test, evaluate, re-evaluate and then comprehend experiences. For children, play provides them everything they need in which an adult obtains through education and work. Play also is a basis for language building. It permits for and promotes sensory experience, reflective thinking and associative memory that are key to growth of motor skills. Therefore play ultimately begins with pleasure and ends with wisdom.
Play also increases creativity. One way is by creating an imaginary world in which they can master. It allows one to manipulate world to fit with anything they may want. This mastery of this imaginary world creates a feeling of power for an individual because they are no longer a reacting agent but now an active agent in an environment. Another way play increases creativity is by allowing one to play with ideas until they find what they are seeking. Often one doesn’t know what they are seeking for so this playing with ideas is a necessary step. It allows for the individual to see relationships, isolate relevant data and then connect these ideas together. Also playing with ideas allows for failure and for trial-and-errors methods to be used without worry of ridicule or failing.
Play is often considered to be a waste of time according to workaholics. This is probably because work is viewed in our current society as a necessity for society to function properly and survive. But since play is a voluntary activity, it is often deemed as not important. But this is not the case; it is because of play being voluntary that makes it important in society. It allows people to relax and recreate themselves after work. It provides a diversion from routines and permits freedom of action. This freedom of action allows one to do what they want when they depending upon their internal needs and wishes. Play is viewed as inferior to work because work is only interested with production and results along with the money, fame and power that are rewarded for it, while play is not. Playing instead is rewarded with intrinsic pleasure that is caused by one’s own internal needs and wishes. This leads to an increase in motivation, sense of achievement, confidence and ego. Therefore it is both important for society to reach a balance between work and play.
To conclude, play aids with finding our identity, helps create relationships with others, is a key feature of learning, increases creativity and balances work.
