An Immersive environment is an interactive, artificial, computer-created world within which a user can participate. To physically build an immersive environment in computer, I think we need a 3D computer graphic,a surround sound speaker and some options that can let the user choose physical interaction for example, with computer games.
To build an immersive environment, the best way is to change our way to collect information. We need to create an environment that users think they are part of. For instance, a ‘reality’ environment that users will enjoy and will be interested in. As a result when collecting the information, think from the user’s perspective; is it ‘real’ enough that the user will enjoy it or not. Second, equipment is also important, for example, a good stereo will intensifying the sound and make the experience real for the users, for drawing people into the environment.
I agree with Winnie and Curtis, that cinema and video games can easily demonstrate an immersive environment. An IMAX cinema is a very good example that can explain an immersive environment because the users utilize their five senses which suggest they are immerse into the environment. The graphic, sound and the dark environment inside the cinema, help the user ‘participate’ in the environment.
A famous horror game called Silent Hill is the best video game that creates an immersive environment. Old buildings, strange and horrible music, and disgusting monsters created an extremely horrifying environment! I think Silent Hill is a very successful game that can control user’s emotions. So a good immersive environment can let users understand the feelings of the world.
To sum up, to create an immersive environment is to build a world that can let the user ‘jump’ into it, which means to get the user’s attention and let them feel like they are a part of the simulation world. As a result, when creating an immersive environment, it is important to consider the user’s perspective because we need to make sure our immersive environment is actually the environment that the users can get into.
