Electracy is a new age word, and to define such a word I found it most useful to start at its roots. Theorist Gregory Ulmer who developed the word puts it as such; “Electracy is to digital technology what literacy is to print.”Electracy can be broken down into two words as I see it, “Electrical” and “literacy”, once broken down, the use and meaning of the word become clear in my opinion. As a society we are moving toward a technological world, we rely less on print but more so on digital sources. Therefore electracy would be the equivalent of the skill to exploit and utilize information from literature only literature in this case is replaced by new electronic media such as multimedia, social software, hypermedia or virtual worlds. James Inman writes of Ulmer’s term; “It is important to distinguish electracy from other terms such as computer based literacy, internet literacy […] None of these other terms have the breadth electracy does as a concept.” This concept is the beginning of the transition from a literate culture to an electronic culture, the invention of the term electrate is only a fraction of evidence that the electronic culture has already elicited changes in the way we think, write and exchange ideas.
Based on my findings of the term and concept of electracy, I believe that to become electrate is to submerse yourself within the realm of technology and to use the diverse forms of media as information and knowledge, it is developing the skill to use new technology as resources.
