I was inspired by the prints of Buffy Sainte-Marie on display at the Codetalkers exhibition. I thought it was interesting how she depicted images of First Nations culture in a digital context. I interpreted it as a constrast between the traditional and the modern and also between preservation and change. Her images seem to bring First Nations culture to a modern day context, yet at the same time by depicting culture clashed with new media elements it could also be read as a statement of cultural absorption. New media allows us to create and share content with large amounts of people and culture are the norms and practices of a society. With new media removing the boundaries that society resides in, the culture those societies have start to mix and change. My art focuses on this dynamic.
