My response is based upon the Song Show exhibition. Originally I had planned on submitting the video I was to make in Michael Britto’s workshop, but as I was not satisfied with the work created I redid the project based on similar guidelines. The Song Show was largely based upon music and I was particularly interested in his “I’m a Slave 4 U” piece. Expanding upon Britto’s exploration of lyrics, I used nursery rhymes in my Out There piece to make my statement.
I find it interesting that many nursery rhymes, while seemingly innocent on the surface, possess an often creepy and chilling meaning. Be it a relation to the Black Death, beheaded figures of royalty, or suicide by hanging, nursery rhymes are quite contradictory! I explored this in my project, aligning the scary lyrics with equally creepy audio and visuals.
